How to Gain Momentum for the Next Year
As we wrap up another year, I wanted to share a system I have been using for years to prepare for the upcoming year.
It involves celebration, reviewing painful moments, introspection, clarity, purpose, accountability and action steps.

This show will guide you through getting the most from your body and mind to generate the maximum performance you want in your life. Let's jump into today's. Okay. [00:35] Welcome [00:35] to another episode of the recharge podcast. I'm your host, Michelle. And what I'm sharing in this is how to gain momentum. I know it's early, just barely into the tail end of 2018, but I like to get clear and get prepared for 2019 and I want to share with you some thoughts and strategies and how you might utilize some tools and some tactics to really approach making 2017, the best year yet. The first thing I'd like to do is review 2018 or the previous year and look at not only what went well, what didn't go so well, what things did I, I want to say fail, but what areas did I fall short of and use those lessons as powerful tools and insights into the limiting beliefs and the mental loops that caused those issues and that causes me to come up short. I want to take lessons forward and learn from sometimes the pain, sometimes the disappointment, and use those as ways to reshape the mental framework of approaching problems in 2019 and solving the problems that I didn't solve this year. [01:41] Some of those are going to linger on and our ongoing battles. It's just part of the journey and that's a powerful tool. The next is to celebrate wins. It doesn't have to be something massive, are monumental. I like to celebrate the small wins. I keep a little book of, of, of, uh, awesomeness, if you will. Just little things that happen on a weekly basis that make me excited or proud or happy or how I've made an impact in someone else's life or my own life or how somebody impacted me and improve my life. I like to look back at those and at the end of the year I have a whole list of those that I can review and it just puts me back into state and brings back all those emotions of joy and happiness and gratitude and so I also look at what things happened that there's just no way I want those to fricking happen again in the following year and want to utilize tools and thought processes and systems to make sure that that doesn't happen again. [02:31] That I don't fall into those ruts, those traps, those mental loops that really tend to derail me in general, and I know we all have those. Nobody's immune from having these loops and mental traps. They're all there. Whether you realize them in your conscious mind or their lurking in the subconscious. If you doubt me, just ask somebody who's close to you and they'll be able to point out some patterns that they see on a consistent basis. The next step is to really get clear, to get absolute clarity and certainty about what I want and that a couple things. Number one is being very specific. I often hear people, whether it's patients or coaching clients, say, I want to lose some weight. Well, that's a very unspecific goal, or I want to make more money. Those things are just intangible and really difficult to approach when it's clear and measurable. [03:15] Say I want to lose five pounds by this date and here's why. It becomes very actionable, very tactical, very strategic in how to go about doing that. There's a difference between losing weight or say, I want to lose, you know, I want to lose like five or 10 pounds. Well, the difference between five pounds and 10 pounds can be dramatic. For example, right now I'm at the tail end of a five day fast. I went into it with some clear goals. I do this every quarter with my wife. I wanted to lose five pounds. I've exceeded that, aligned to maintain productivity, mental energy, wanting to work out, wanting to keep my business and my consulting clients going on track just as before I started the fast, despite some dips in energy and I was able to do that. But by having a clear idea, I want to lose. [04:00] For example, I want to lose three pounds by a January 15th and I'm gonna accomplish this by number one, not putting sugar or sweetener in my coffee. Number two, skipping the afternoon snack break at work, and number three, uh, getting a workout buddy and working out consistently at least three to five times a week where I sweat and get my heart rate up for at least 20 minutes. Very clear, easy to measure actionable. And there's an accountability component to it as well. So I think you can see what I'm getting at by really being concise about what you want rurally, help you plan out the steps and implement some strategies and tactics to get you the results and the outcome you're looking for. You need to get excited about it. And part of that is understanding your why. Why is it important to lose a few pounds, like three to five pounds? [04:45] Why is it important to make another $10,000 this year? Well, it could be something like you want to take a family trip to Greece next summer. You want to fit into your clothes better and you know, you'll feel better if you lose three pounds and you'll have more energy and be more motivated and more, more clear mentally because you're not pumping sugar into your body. And so getting some why behind your outcomes really helps motivate and drive you. It makes you excited about that. The anticipation of an outcome, a trip in event is often as pleasurable, if not more pleasurable than the actual event itself. Uh, I can speak from experience. It took my family to Italy last year and the whole planning process for a variety of reasons was very exciting. The kids were involved in it. They were online looking at things, they were talking about clothes and the food they eat. [05:31] And they were looking at the rental houses and they were very wrapped up in the whole process and involved and it really kind of created a buzz and an energy in our house, particularly as the date became closer and closer and it actually was a reality and so that really created some excitement, some focus. We had a certain outcome and by laying out this trip, well in advance of my wife and I knew what we needed to do financially to make that a reality. What sort of tactics and strategies can we implement to achieve that and what do we need to do in our own businesses because we both are entrepreneurs and run our own businesses. How do we keep those businesses alive and running when we're gone off the grid for two weeks and so all those things create a focus in and get us committed on those results and as you gain momentum from clarity, accountability, and understanding your why, you'll generate more and more momentum in another way to maintain that momentum as you push into these challenging areas and outcomes. [06:28] As you wrap up this year at push into the next year is to track it to keep a journal. I keep a written journal because I find that the written aspect of it as much more mentally stimulating than if I would just type it into a computer on some spreadsheet that I never see. Another little tip trick I use is I have my outcomes for the upcoming year on my home screen on my phone. So every time I pick up my phone I see that there is a background image there that really sparks my mind, my emotion, my gratitude, my happiness, and really gets me into state to help me realize the importance of why I want to achieve these 10 things. And you can have your own categories, but it might include, you know, your business, your bonds with your friends, your family, your relationship with your significant other, your health, uh, your, your spirit or creator or spirituality, whatever words you'd like to use. [07:17] There are a whole host of other things. Um, fun, adventure, travel. You can create your own category, but those pop up, every time I pick up my phone reminds me on a daily basis, multiple times over and over again why I'm doing what I'm doing, why I'm making some choices, some sacrifices, some decisions that aren't always fun, and I'm tracking all these in a journal, so I review these obviously every day when I look at my phone, but once a week I review them, see where I'm at, whether I'm on target or on track with the specific outcomes. I create checkpoints and milestones. You know it's tempting to aim for the moon and that's fine, but you know even though you fall short, you're still better than you were before, but I encourage you to create tangible, achievable, actionable, innovator, intermediary steps that can allow you to celebrate the small wins and allow you to see progress. [08:07] You want to lose five pounds while you lost one pound this week. Check positive, excellent, good job, and track your progress as you achieve your goals. That reinforces your why and that you are capable of achieving much more than you thought you were in our review. These every quarter and at the six month mark, and again, as I wrap up the year and I do this early, I do it right after the Thanksgiving holiday. The house is quiet, uh, before the buzz of the Christmas season and it gets me really focused and honed in. So that one, 2019, uh, comes into chime. I'm already onboard hitting the ground, running, ready to go. I know what I'm going to achieve this year. I know how I'm going to do it and I can clearly proceed with a course of action. So I hope you found that helpful and I want to share something else with you, uh, just as a special bonus for making it to the end of this.
