Most people think reading at shops is about what happens at the table; but it’s not. It’s about everything that happens before someone ever sits down. It's about how you approach the shop to begin with, and whether that shop is a good fit for you. It's about the way you present yourself to the owner, so they see you as a value add-on instead of another mouth to feed. Shop owners have their own bills to pay and endless paperwork, contracts, and taxes. They have to guess what people will actually pay for, and how to get them into the shop to pay for things at all. I know from personal experience that running a shop is not as glamorous as working at one.
So we need to get you spiffed up so you can look like a real professional who will bring value and customers in to their shop to spend money on books and supplies. If you understand that — truly get that — and apply even a few of the ideas we are covering today, you won’t be the reader sitting in the corner hoping someone notices you. You will be a valuable addition to any retail environment. You’ll be the one people walk across the room to find.
