Weight loss & muscle growth are easier to achieve than we think. I was a very thin guy in high school and never thought I was ever gonna build muscle. All I ever thought, or was told, was that I had a "fast metabolism". Yes I have a fast metabolism but all that means is while I burn naturally 2,000 calories and with my workout included I burn around 3,500, all it means for me to grow muscle is that I need to eat above 3,500 calories a day. Vice versa with weight loss. If I wanted to lose body fat then I would need to eat about 3,250 a day depending on how much weight or fat I want to drop.
Before we get into deficits and surpluses though, there is one manor factor to address first. You need to understand what food is first and how to eat for health. A lot of people want to eat for weight loss or muscle growth but don't even know what a calorie is (this is why getting a coach is crucial). Once you've understood what a carb is, a protein is, or a fat is, then you're going to have greater success in your deficits or surpluses.
