Ever wonder why your underwater photos come out blurry, silty, or completely miss the subject? The answer almost always comes down to one skill: buoyancy control. In this episode, veteran underwater photographer Marcus Okafor breaks down the exact techniques he's developed over thousands of dives to achieve rock-solid stability while shooting everything from tiny nudibranchs to massive whale sharks. If you have at least 20 dives under your belt and want to stop fighting your body position so you can focus on composition, this guide will transform how you move—or don't move—underwater.

  • Your camera rig completely changes your buoyancy profile, and counterintuitively, you should remove 1–2 pounds of lead when adding a heavy housing rather than keeping your usual weight—this gives you better control range for micro-adjustments.
    • Aluminum housings with strobes typically add 3–5 pounds of negative buoyancy at depth, while big DSLR rigs with dual strobes and 8-inch dome ports can add 6–8 pounds.
      • Your lungs hold 5–7 pounds of lift variation between full and empty, making breath control more powerful than your BCD for fine-tuning position during a shot.
        • The 4-second breathing cycle (2 seconds in, 2 seconds out) with a pause at the bottom of each exhale creates the most stable platform for framing subjects.
          • Practice rising and sinking 3 feet using only breath control—no BCD adjustments—until it becomes second nature, as this boring drill is the foundation of all advanced positioning.
            • Never hold your breath while ascending, even during stability exercises; Boyle's Law doesn't care about your composition, and expanding air can cause serious injury.
