Good morning, it’s James from SurvivalPunk.com, and today we’re kicking off a brand-new series about something every prepper eventually runs face-first into:
dumb laws that make preparedness harder — and how to prep anyway.
Some of these laws are outdated.
Some are politically motivated.
Some are pushed by corporations to protect profits.
Some exist because some bureaucrat in a cubicle decided you shouldn’t be allowed to take care of yourself.
But here’s the Survival Punk truth:
You’re responsible for your survival. The government isn’t.
So if a law makes that harder? You work around it — safely, legally, and intelligently.
This is Part 1. Let’s get into it.
The Berkey Ban and Why It’s Stupid
In some states, it is literally illegal to ship a Berkey water filter because it doesn’t meet NSF certification.
Not because it doesn’t work — Berkey probably over-filters, if anything.
But because someone in an office decided it wasn’t stamped with the right sticker.
So what happens?
Vendors can’t ship into those states
Customers find out at checkout
Sales get shut down
And people who want clean water get blocked
Meanwhile, bottled water is fine.
Unfiltered tap water is fine.
Filters that remove almost nothing are fine.
But a system that removes bacteria, cysts, metals, chemicals, and viruses?
Yeah — that’s the one they target.
If you need a Berkey-style filter in one of these states, you can:
Ship it to a friend in another state
Ship it to a package locker across the border
Buy used from Craigslist or Marketplace
Purchase a non-Berkey gravity system with similar performance
Dumb laws don’t stop preppers.
They just make us more creative.
Rainwater Collection Bans — The King of Stupid Laws
There are places in the U.S. where collecting rainwater is heavily restricted or basically illegal.
Yes — they believe the sky water belongs to the government.
You pay taxes.
You maintain your property.
You bought your home.
But somehow, catching water that lands on your roof is taboo.
So what do people do?
They get clever.
Rainwater catchment can be:
Hidden behind fences
Buried in the ground
Built inside sheds
Camouflaged with trellises or shrubs
Disguised as decorative barrels or planters
Your system doesn’t have to look like a prepper project.
It can look like landscaping.
If you’re worried about attention, nothing hides better than a grid of regular-looking rain barrels painted to match the house — or buried totes feeding a hand pump.
Water is survival.
You get water however you need to get water.
Kratom: Legal, Illegal, Helpful, Harmful — and Why It Matters
Kratom is one of those “grey zone” items where politicians scream louder than science.
Is it dangerous? It can be.
Is it addictive? Some people say yes.
Is it wildly helpful for chronic pain? Absolutely.
Is it safer than opioids? Without question.
But because it gives people an alternative to pharmaceuticals, some places want to ban it.
You’ve used kratom yourself — not daily — but when pain gets bad.
And now, you’re experimenting with wild lettuce extract as a replacement.
This is what preppers do:
We test things while times are good so we know what works when times are bad.
In a long-term collapse, medicine disappears first.
Pain relief becomes a survival tool.
Knowing what grows, what works, what’s safe, and what’s too risky could make the difference between functioning and suffering.
This series isn’t about advocating any substance.
It’s about understanding your options before the options disappear.
Why Governments Keep Targeting Self-Sufficiency
Every dumb prepper law boils down to three things:
Control
“If you can provide for yourself, you don’t need us.”
Liability
“If something goes wrong, they want someone else to blame.”
Revenue
Self-sufficient people don’t buy as much.
They don’t rely on government programs.
They don’t pump money into crisis systems.
Preppers threaten the business model of dependence.
So the system pushes back.
The only way around this is simple:
build your life in a way that doesn’t draw attention but still gets the job done.
Quiet preppers survive longest.
The Real Goal: Become Harder to Regulate
Prepping is freedom.
And freedom is a moving target.
So you become someone who is:
harder to ban
harder to restrict
harder to starve
harder to freeze
harder to intimidate
harder to manipulate
You don’t break laws.
You don’t do stupid things.
You don’t paint a target on your back.
But you quietly build resilience anyway.
Because SHTF doesn’t care what the law says.
Your survival doesn’t either.
Final Thoughts
Dumb laws aren’t going away.
Dumb politicians aren’t going away.
Dumb restrictions aren’t going away.
But you?
You can out-think all of it.
This has been James from SurvivalPunk.com — DIY to survive, think smarter than the system, and stay tuned for Part 2 of prepping around dumb laws.
