How to Prevent Rock Sinking in Your Landscape

Listen Later

Rock sinking happens when landscape stones slowly settle into the soil, resulting in uneven and untidy rock beds. In Denver, this issue is commonly caused by clay-heavy soil, freeze–thaw cycles, poor drainage, and installing rock directly on bare soil.

To prevent rock from sinking, start by properly compacting the soil. Install a solid base layer using crushed gravel and decomposed granite, and place high-quality landscape fabric on top to prevent soil from mixing with the rock layer. Choose angular stones that lock together, ensure proper grading for effective drainage, and install durable edging to keep materials contained.

Maintain a consistent rock depth and perform seasonal maintenance by removing debris and correcting small low spots early. With the right layering system, proper drainage, and routine upkeep, your rock beds can remain stable, clean, and visually appealing for many years.
