Emotions are such a big part of the human experience. However, in the West and many other places, we often neglect to train our children to identify, communicate, or even feel feelings. How should we go about training our kids, teaching them to navigate life as a human being and truly experience it successfully?
As a licensed psychologist, Dr. Doug Weiss has dealt with the fallout of this issue from adults who didn’t learn how to manage their feelings as kids or teenagers. They get stuck, ignored, or medicate their feelings in various forms of dysfunctions or addictions, unable to open their hearts up to others. How does one break a cycle that has gone on in society for thousands of years?
In this video, Dr. Weiss shares several ideas and practices that parents can consider in raising their children. However, it should be established that such a goal cannot be done without much time and effort. Not only does the parent have to take full responsibility for the child’s emotional development, they themselves must be emotionally fit as well. Parents are to be role models for their children. If they aren’t mature emotionally but expect their kids to be, the child will never get it.
One simply cannot leave this job to others, as the culture you live in might not be the best to do so. Teaching your child how to share their feelings, to know what a feeling is, leads to a lot of benefits in their communication and relationships in life. When they share, they show all of who they are and they become authentic. We don’t make decisions on feelings but its good to know what feelings we’re having.
In raising emotionally healthy children, one must be intentional and disciplined. The sooner you start this process, the better. Making feelings part of the conversation lets them know you’re a safe place. In time, they will be able to figure out and manage their feelings properly, truly becoming emotionally fit.
