How To Raise Self-Trusting Girls: 5 Parenting Strategies That Actually Work

Listen Later

In this episode of the Minding Mine podcast, I'm getting real about one of the most important things I'm doing as a mom - teaching my daughters to deeply trust themselves. While I'm still doing my own inner work and unlearning old patterns, I'm intentional about giving my girls the foundation I wish I'd had. Here are the five things I practice at home:

1. I let them disagree with me. I don't pull the "because I said so" card. Instead, I create space for respectful dialogue, genuinely listen to my daughters' perspectives, and celebrate them for speaking their truth — even when it's hard.

2. I ask questions instead of giving advice. When something happens at school or with a friend, I resist the urge to jump in and fix it. I validate, get curious, and guide my girls back to their own instincts — because I want the voice in their head to be theirs, not mine.

3. I apologize when I'm wrong. I'm human — sometimes I'm distracted, snappy, or checked out. When that happens, I own it, repair it, and move forward. I'm modeling that accountability and love can exist in the same breath.

4. I don't judge my body — or anyone else's. After years of dieting and shrinking myself, I'm intentional about never talking negatively about bodies in front of my girls. I talk about movement for strength, health, and stress relief — not for how it makes me look.

5. I let them watch me choose myself. My daughters see me record podcast episodes, lead groups, and take the stage — nervous and doing it anyway. That's the real lesson: trust isn't the absence of fear. It's moving forward even when your knees are knocking.

Bonus tip: Don't underestimate the car ride conversation. Some of the best, most open moments happen in those 10–15 minutes after school.
