These are tried and true methods to shutting this behavior out of your life.
Usually compulsive masturbation issues go side-by-side with pornography use and sometimes addiction.
I have heard this question for over thirty years of counseling porn addicts. I want to answer this question as quickly as possible. Here are the symptoms of any addiction applied to pornography. As you read them, think about your behavior and check off “yes” or “no” in your head. If you want to know what type of porn addict you are, you can read about the five types of porn addictions here: The Five Types of Porn Addicts.
It is very helpful to know what type of porn addict you are before seeking help. Let’s see if you are a porn addict. Check out the signs below, and ask yourself the following questions:
- As I look over the years, I am spending more time viewing pornography.
- My pornography appetite has grown in time or requires wider variety to be satisfied.
- When I am looking at porn, I am looking for that hit or high at some point.
- I have reduced other activities overtime including social outings, family events, sports, exercise, dating, and work to have more time to look at porn.
- I get anxious if I believe I can’t look at porn for a while.
- I get irritable if I don’t look at porn on a regular basis.
- My porn viewing has led me to experiment sexually.
- I have lost friends or romantic relationships over pornography viewing.
- I feel I am living a double life.
- I have tried to stop porn in the past.
- I have failed repeatedly when I tried to stop viewing porn.
- I have had social and/or economic consequences due to porn usage.
- I continued to use porn even after having consequences from pornography.
I have sought help for my porn usage.
I have had romantic partners or spouses that have complained about my porn usage.
I know I am addicted to porn.
Now, take your answers and honestly ask yourself how you are doing in relation to using porn. You may need to seek help if you are struggling with a porn addiction. Needing help is not a bad thing or something to be ashamed of. We all need help occasionally with different things. Fighting pornography is no different. However, it is important to know if someone is able to effectively treat your porn addiction.
