How to Stop Neglecting Your Overall Health

Listen Later

Why is it that when we want to take care of our health, it’s always too late?

This kind of flawed mindset is founded on the human desire to live forever - or at least for a long time. And we think that just because we desire it, it will happen. But that is never the case. In fact, even with the advent of scientific and technological advancements, we have stunted our ability to preserve our health simply because we are not careful about our lifestyle. We tend to abuse and overwork our minds and bodies, almost always to our detriment.

This week, I highlight some of the best lessons I’ve learned when it comes to my health and wellbeing. From respecting your body to knowing the purpose of your pain, having a deeper understanding of how your body works and how your lifestyle and mentality fit into the picture are such important aspects to learn.

Also, I am giving away an autographed copy of the soon-to-be-released book The Unchained Goddess that I co-authored.

These are six things you need to take to heart in order to avoid neglecting your health:

  • #1 - Don't get buried under all those hats you're wearing - at the risk of overwhelming and overextending yourself! (From Episode 19 - I’m Not Your Superwoman)
  • #2 - Stop normalizing trauma and start talking about its impact - no matter how small or big it may be (From Episode 39 - Trauma from Black Mamas)
  • #3 - Quit trying to control everything and let your body take its natural course. (From Episode 7 - What Your Mama Never Told You About Menopause)
  • #4 - The journey to motherhood is just that a journey and everyone looks different. (From Episode 16 - Infertility Chose Me, But IVF Helped Me To Become A Mommy Part II)
  • #5 - Advocate for yourself.  No matter how many letters the doctor has after their name no one knows you better than you. (From Episode 8 - My Doctor Didn’t Help Me When Cancer Tried to Take Me Out Part I)
  • #6 - Recognize that your pain has a purpose and your story needs to be told so others too can survive. (From Episode 9 - My Doctor Didn’t Help Me When Cancer Tried to Take Me Out Part II)
