My guest today is Melody Miles. Melody and I recently got connected through Instagram.
Melody worked for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, as a scientist, diplomat.
Melody is now a writer and recovering-humanitarian, who helped launch the global effort to eradicate malaria. She has traveled to the far corners of the planet listening to the voices of the poor, representing the voices of the rich, and chasing after an extraordinary life. All her efforts checking boxes, saying yes, and surpassing milestones landed her the life she thought she wanted.
Then her life unexpectedly collided head-on with heartbreak and she lost everything: her mom, her husband, her home, and dreams of having a family. In the wake of this pain, after all her attempts to muster her way forward failed, she started wondering if maybe it’s not the strength of our calculating minds - but the softness of our hearts - that heals us and brings us back to life. She quit her philanthropy work, sold all her belongings, and set out to travel solo around the world to answer a question that was relentless keeping her up a night:
In all her work fighting for the freedom of others, was she truly living free herself?Spoiler alert: she wasn’t.
Melody’s story is one of life knocking her down, waking her up, and showing her the freedom she longed for was ripe for her taking in the very place she least expected it: in this throws of an unmasked, unseen, ordinary life.
The world has plenty of voices cheering readers onto bigger accomplishments. Melody wants to be a voice for those on the path of decent, surrendering to the freefall and inviting their pain to be their guide as they chase after new beginnings.
Melody holds a Masters in Global Health, a Bachelors’ in Science, and Certificate in Faith & Work. She blogs at https://melodymiles.com/ about letting-go, navigating transition, and wresting with shame until your soul finally feels wild and free again.
