How Women Invented Book Clubs and Revolutionized Reading: A brief history of women in the literary world

Listen Later

Nowadays, we see book clubs everywhere! With big names like Oprah and Reese Witherspoon hosting their own book clubs, these groups have become very mainstream. From schools to libraries to online spaces, book clubs are all around. However, it wasn't aways this way. Literary spaces have been known to be extremely exclusive, especially to marginalized groups. In a time where women were so commonly excluded from universities and philosophical circles, so often denied the right to education and were ridiculed for trying to engage in any type of literature, women still found means to access and engage with this literature in their own right as well as with other women. In this episode, we discuss all the ways women invented book clubs and revolutionized the literary world.
