Howard City Chamber: When people hear the words “Chamber of Commerce,” many assume it is simply a marketing organization for local businesses. While promotion is certainly part of the mission, the Howard City Area Chamber of Commerce serves a much broader purpose.

In this episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, Bruce Williams, President of the Howard City Area Chamber of Commerce, shares how the Chamber works behind the scenes to strengthen the community, support local businesses, and serve as a bridge between organizations, residents, and visitors.

Founded in 2023, the Howard City Area Chamber of Commerce has grown into an active community organization focused on connection, communication, and collaboration. Its mission is simple: “Where Community Connects.”

One of the Chamber’s most valuable roles is serving as a community ambassador. Whether answering questions from potential residents, connecting visitors with local businesses, or promoting community events, the Chamber helps tell the story of Howard City and the surrounding area.

Bruce explains that many people misunderstand what a Chamber actually does. Unlike a marketing agency that promotes a single business, a Chamber promotes an entire community. It works to create awareness of local businesses, organizations, attractions, events, and opportunities that make the area unique.

The Chamber also maintains representation on several local boards and committees, giving businesses a voice at the table and helping members stay informed about community developments, projects, and opportunities.

One of the Chamber’s growing successes is the Howard City Business & Community Expo. What began as a local event has expanded to attract businesses and visitors from across West Michigan, demonstrating the growing interest in Howard City and its business community.

Perhaps the greatest strength of the Howard City Area Chamber of Commerce is its volunteers. Local business owners and community leaders donate their time and expertise to help create opportunities that benefit the entire area.
