HS2 Protest Camp at Euston Station

Listen Later

It has been estimated that the cost to build the High Speed 2 (HS2) railway - a fast trainline that will go from London to Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds - will cost up to £170bn of British taxpayers money. That number keeps increasing.  On top of that, the cost isn't just financial;  ancient forests, woodland, communities, houses and businesses already are being destroyed as the construction begins. Several protest camps exist around the country in opposition to the construction of HS2.

I visited the protest camp outside of Euston station in London where protestors and rough sleepers live in tents and treehouses.  One protestor was arrested there in September for climbing a HS2 crane and going on hunger strike for a couple of days. I visited on a quiet Sunday morning and I managed to speak to some people that have been living there over the last three months.
