Publisher's Summary:
In this book you are going to discover the basics of HTML 5 and how it works. If you are already familiar with other versions of HTML, especially HTML 4, then learning HTML 5 will be a piece of cake for you. HTML 5 is the latest version of hypertext markup language, yet it incorporates various features from HTML 4 and even XHTML.
What you'll discover in HTML 5:
Members Reviews:
Use caution with the information provided here if you really want to learn HTML5 properly.
I'll be honest, its a decent overview, but some of the information does not comply with standards.
For example:
In the book the
tag is explained in a way that suggests it is ok to use it for layout. He doesn't explicitly say that you should, but the example does not give proper context for what would comply with web standards.
"< p > This line is broken into < br > two parts "
A second example:
He states that the tag is frequently used in HTML5 (which I think is a surprising statement in of itself), and that it is used to format text as underlined. Not only does that go against the rule of separating content from style, it also isn't exactly what the W3.org folks (people who set the web standards) have decided either.
"The element was deprecated in HTML 4.01. (the element was used to define underlined text).
The element is redefined in HTML5, to represent text that should be stylistically different from normal text, such as misspelled words or proper nouns in Chinese."
Like I said, just be careful with the information you see here. Confirm everything with w3.org to ensure you're learning things properly.
extremely basic
It has been a number of years since I dabbled in html, however seeing recent examples on the web of what can be done now with HTML5 motivated me to have another look. Unfortunately this book focuses on just the very basics of html - how to layout text, tables, lists, pictures & videos. None of the new and exciting aspects of HTML5 are addressed. At best, it is a quick reference for performing very simple text and image layout tasks with HTML.
One Star
I give you one star because in the book is not enough elements for webdesign
This book was almost a complete waste of my time
This book was almost a complete waste of my time.
I did find a few handy page element snippets that I can use for reference, but I already have vastly better reference books/apps for CSS and HTML. I was looking for a fresh perspective and maybe a few new spins, but what I found was that there is no in-depth repository of knowledge in this book.
If you want to learn how to write a web page, from scratch, Do NOT buy this book. This book is only a small collection of handy, incomplete, hints.
And as I stated, there are vastly better reference books out there.
At $2.99, before tax, I feel robbed.
MACJR
Waste of time if you already know any HTML
I have to strongly disagree with the book description about the usefulness of this book for those of us who already know previous versions of HTML. This book is a waste of time for if you know HTML4. It's VERY basic - a small book - and only 106 pages of large font and lots of generous spacing.
