Carle Kopecky has some interesting views about America’s 250th birthday. As a Revolutionary War re-enacter since the Bicentennial he looks at American military leaders, war, and the politics of Democracy from an 18th Century viewpoint. He talked this week on The Beyond the Brink podcast with Rosemary Armao about America then and now.

NYS Lawmakers have sent a bill to Governor Hochul to impose a one year moratorium on data centers. There is also a data center proposed at the Kenwood Center in the south end of Albany. A new report by the Environmental Integrity Project examines the environmental impact of situations where data center operators build their own power plants to provide electricity for the facility, which, so far, is not the case at Kenwood. One justification for such an approach is to avoid raising the rates for other electric users, though the report found that is not always the case. Nationally, at least 74 natural gas-fired power plants are planned to supply energy to the rapidly growing data center industry. Many of the plants would be built in parts of the country already struggling with low incomes and premature death, and could worsen local public health. The 60 attorney and non-attorney staff of the Albany County Public Defender's Office have filed for voluntary union recognition with the ALAA (UAW). On Friday, June 26, they rallied outside county offices after the County Executive Office refused to voluntarily recognize them. They are now waiting for a ruling from the state. Public Defenders provide legal representation to the most vulnerable people within the criminal justice system, but there has been a wave of resignations since the end of 2025. Attorney Ava Agree spoke with Sal Rochelle about the reasons behind this. County Executive Daniel McCoy did not respond to requests for his comments.

The power of storytelling within poetry is the ability to bring out emotions using few, well-chosen words. The poet is able to take readers into a world of vivid color and feelings. The storytelling of poetry can bring together cultural and personal divides, making it easier for different groups to understand varying points of view and experiences. Poets use rhythm, rhyme, and metaphor to develop themes of love, loss, and identity.

This week, our poet, Randee Renzi, uses her words to tell the story of being a human, a woman, and a mother.

Randee took the Low Beat Stage on September 18, 2018 shared three poems. She started out with a work-in-progress, "Reach Out to Me." Then, from memory, Randee recited a poem of the love and fears of being a white mother to a black son, "Beautiful Brown Baby Boy." She finished her set with a simple piece titled, appropriately enough, "Peace."
