Subjective Truth vs. Objective Humanity

Is the real world merely a universe of facts about physical things, or are values and meanings objectively real as well? Can we separate our view of humanity from our view of reality? How subjective is moral truth? In this broadcast Jon and Joel discuss the relationship between materialism and the advance of moral relativism in our culture with respect to the inherent contradictions of a godless worldview.

“His mind slid away into the labyrinthine world of doublethink. To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, to repudiate morality while laying claim to it . . . to forget whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again: and above all, to apply the same process to the process itself.”

– George Orwell, 1984

“Fearing the LORD is the very foundation of wisdom, and knowing the Holy One amounts to insight.”

– Proverbs 9:10

“His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divinity in particular, have been made clearly evident from the creation of the world, being recognized by the created beings, leaving them without excuse. Being thus aware of God, you see, they gave Him neither the glory nor gratitude due Him as God, but instead were rendered useless in their reasoning and their hearts were further clouded with nonsense.”

– Romans 1:20-21
