Welcome to the season finale episode on getting to know 'The Human Behind The Mask'! Next time genuinely ask someone how they’re doing. Let them know that they don’t have to pretend to be someone they’re not when they’re around you. Let them know that you care what’s going on in their life and that their thoughts matter. No one should have to apologize for who they truly are. Get to know the human behind the mask because “There’s more to me than what meets the eye.”

Humans of Chapman showcases individual stories from students, faculty, and neighbors of the Chapman Community in Orange, CA. Weekly episodes highlight interviews surrounding themes of identity, struggles, gratitude, triumph, and much more. Every portrait, quote, and excerpt strives to portray each individual with heartfelt authenticity.

In this episode, I sparked some conversations on the topic of Inspiration. These 2 people ended up inspiring me by sharing their biggest inspirations. And I think that’s such a beautiful thing. When I see people’s eyes light up when they speak because they’re so passionate about something, I know I found something special. And by asking random people deep questions that I wouldn’t normally go out and talk to, I have the chance to reflect on my own life and it pushes me to grow and learn. That’s why I’m so excited for you to hear these stories. And I think it’s perfect timing to share these as it’s now the month of giving thanks. Life is scary. Fear knows no boundaries and haunts everyone. Our deepest, darkest fears are a part of our complex narrative and I thought it would be fitting to explore some of these scary experiences for today’s episode that just so happens to land on Halloween! Stay tuned for next week’s episode on what brings Humans of Chapman gratitude and motivation!

Today I met 4 individuals who were kind enough to shed their layers and display vulnerability. I asked them questions like, “What is your biggest struggle right now?” or “What aspect of your identity are you most proud of?” These broad and open ended questions are just conversation starters that I utilize to dig deeper into lives of Humans of Chapman.
