Humiliation that Leads to Transformation

Daniel 4:19-37

1.  God calls us to Stand for the Truth

a.  Daniel demonstrates care for Nebuchadnezzar (vs 19)

b.  The king demonstrates care for Daniel (vs 19)

c.  Daniel accurately interprets the dream (vs 20-27)

i.  The king is the great tree. (His greatness) (vv. 20–22).

ii.  The king is the tree chopped down with only a stump remaining (v. 23).

iii.  The king will live like an animal outdoors in the fields until “seven periods of time” pass (vv. 23–25).

iv.  All of this is to teach the king a valuable lesson. (“The Most High is ruler over human kingdoms, and he gives them to anyone he wants” (v. 25)).

v.  Nebuchadnezzar will get his kingdom back when he comes to his spiritual senses (v. 26).

vi.  God is gracious and loving and is quick to forgive and show mercy.

2.  God Calls us to Repent and be Righteous (vs 27)

a.  It’s not too late to follow God

b.  It’s not too late to change your ways

c.  Nebuchadnezzar had to face his sins.

3.  God Calls us to be Humble (vs 28-33)

a.  God demonstrates patience (vs 29)

b.  God demonstrates correction (vs 28, 32-33)

4.  God Calls us to Exalt Him (vs 34-37)

a.  Pride gets in the way of our proper view of God.

b.  Worshiping God is reasonable

5.  4 Reasonable Responses (to the greatness and sovereignty of God) (from Charles Spurgeon)

a.  Have a heart of humble adoration.

b.  Show a heart of unquestioning acceptance.

c.  Exercise the spirit of reverent love.

d.  Let your spirit have profound delight.
