Hurricane season is well underway, that means time for some specific planning for those living on the eastern seaboard of North America. Hurricanes begin in the warm waters of the South Atlantic and are influenced by a number of weather phenomenons that steer them towards a destination, determine the strength of the storm and velocity. The predictability allows for deliberate planning, considering the threats to your home, gathering information from trusted sources and informing the decision to evacuate or shelter in place. Knowing that decision, considering the family members for whom you'll be responsible and their animalistic requirements will lead to the development of your family preparedness plan. Sheltering in place should be planned for 14 days without access to critical infrastructure such as utilities, transportation, communications and a host of other public and private sector services.
If you're having difficulty managing after 72 hours without power, that's a lack of planning, not a lack of effort from emergency services. Assume responsibility for your outcomes, make a plan and lead your family through the disruption back to normalcy.
