Season 1, Episode 5
In Choosing Her Hustle today, we hear from Tiara Abu, founder of She Can Work, a school for women featuring online classes about saving, making, and investing more money. She is also the founder of Lead with People, a coaching and professional learning company. Tiara works with women to break out of the shadow of a male-dominated culture.
Before leaving a nine-to-five job as a deputy chief in a Texas school system, she received annual promotions. However, she witnessed Black women like her sacrifice their health and well-being for their jobs. She left her six-figure position behind to put the same amount of energy into her own businesses. She said, “I am no longer going to contribute to unhealthy Black women in the workplace.” Although she thought her purpose was a career in education, she wrestled with finding her new purpose. Tiara demanded more of herself as a wife and mother, which meant focusing less on work. She wanted to positively impact her family, her lifestyle, and the same things for other women. She is not sorry for choosing herself!
Tiara discusses what it takes to intentionally choose yourself. It’s the act of liberation. Her classes and coaching guide clients to be liberated of what has held them back, pushed them down, and dismissed their health.
Leticia shares her path in reconditioning her mindset from living to sacrifice to loving life. With her clients, she guides them to first get clear in what it is that they’re creating. Parents, grandparents, and other generations hustled and sacrificed. We need to break the cycle and find joy.
Tiara’s top advice: When leaving your job, do not be sorry that you’re walking away from it. The company will post and hire someone to replace you. Provide your employer a simplified resignation letter and be firm in your decision.
What’s next for Tiara Abu? She is launching a community for Black women named Unyoked. Women will be guided into being high-performing women who cheerlead for themselves. Coaches and therapists in the group will lead members through transformations.
Tiara has also offered an exclusive discount for all listeners, so make sure you use the code BOSSUP for 50% off her coaching platform to help you make more money, save more money, and invest in yourself. Thank you Tiara!
