As Moses lead the Israelites out of Egypt there is a process of developing an identity. They go from being slaves to a nation. As slaves you are not valued, not powerful, not precious or protected. They keep expecting to be abandoned and to die. Why have you brought us out here to die? They expect God to be fickle and angry. God’s kindness is their healing and their protection, but it also speaks to their anxious and insecure identity. ‘I’ve got you. I’m taking care of you.” It’s the process of God adopting these slaves and making them sons- but they have "attachment disorder", they rebel and don’t trust his goodness.
If God is our security, what is our identity? I am cared for, precious, worth protecting, my suffering and wellbeing matters to God.
