16For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "But the righteous man shall live by faith." Romans 1:16–17 (NASB95)
Romans 1:16-17 contains the theme of the letter in four clauses, each supporting the one that comes before it:
"For I am not ashamed of the gospel..."
• Ashamed - UNWILLING or RESTRAINED because of fear of shame, ridicule, or DISAPPROVAL.
1 Peter 3:18 NASB95 18 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;
• The gospel: Jesus of Nazareth, the son of God, was GOSPEL for our sins, RAISED from the dead, and is Lord of all.
"For it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes..."
• Salvation is GOD'S WORK.
• EVERYONE needs the gospel.
Ephesians 1:19–20 NLT 19 I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God's power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power 20 that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God's right hand in the heavenly realms.
"For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith..."
• The ability to have a right STANDING with GOD comes from God.
"But the righteous man will live by faith"
• The only way to have a right STANDING with God is by FAITH and has always been by FAITH.
Hebrews 11:6 NASB95 6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
Genesis 15:6 NLT 6 And Abram believed the Lord, and the Lord counted him as righteous because of his faith.
