Justice Raymond Zondo said on Friday he knew that heading the Commission of Inquiry into State Capture was going to create enemies for him.

Zondo is one of four candidates being interviewed to fill the position of Chief Justice.

Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng’s term as Chief Justice came to an end in October after ten years.

Zondo was appointed as a judge at the age of 37. He has completed 25 years on the bench.

If appointed, he will only serve two-and-half years given his age. He will be 62 years old in May. He said two-and-a-half years is not a bad thing for the position of Chief Justice.

In his interview on Friday, he said the Constitutional Court should not delay in giving its judgments and added that it must give guidance to the rest of the courts on important legal issues.

He said it was imperative to always try to strike a balance between not taking too long to reach an agreement and at the same time not being dismissive of your colleague’s views to quickly make a judgment.

Zondo said he had made suggestions to his colleagues on how to deal with the backlogs in cases that had reserved judgments.

He also said in the long run the Constitution should be amended to allow judges of the Constitutional Court to have fewer panels with regard to certain matters.

He said this would help dispose of many matters much faster in the same way as in the Supreme Court of Appeal where at times only two judges work on a matter.

Zondo said although the country had made great strides in terms of race, the issue of transformation was still important.

He said he would like to see more black and women judges in the branches of law.
