In this episode of Can’t Find My Way Home, I was joined by Anthony Garcia.
Anthony, calling from his home in Austin, Texas, was kind enough to share some stories about his expat adventures, and of course, his music.
“Originally from Lubbock, Texas, Garcia draws inspiration for the mood and cinematic feel of his music from a hometown rich in music history. His travels throughout the world have exposed him to a variety of cultures and music that have contributed to his expansive repertoire and knowledge of musical styles.” (https://www.anthonygarciamusic.com)
We discuss how meeting and befriending a German exchange student in high school, helped pique Anthony’s interest in the language and culture of the country. This also led to his first European back-packing trip in the mid-90’s and eventually to him studying abroad for a year in the town of Giessen.
After several years back in Texas, teaching music at a local college and playing the bars and clubs at night, Anthony felt like he was losing his focus of being creative and was using music to make money.
Next step, and an attempt to recharge his batteries, was a stint teaching in Busan, South Korea. Instead of taking a step back from the music scene, Anthony found himself at the forefront of Busan’s vibrant music scene. We get into some of the finer details.
Anthony also talks us through the music scene in Austin, post-Covid. As well as an overview of his latest, critically-acclaimed album, Acres of Diamonds.
We get into cinematic soundscapes, musical influences, the best venues in New Mexico, the exuberance of the Expat audience and more in his Top 5!
All this and why Germany has the best breakfasts!
