This memoir traces a life shaped by three enduring forces: ambition, duty, and cultural norms. Like strands woven together, they crossed, pulled against one another, and ultimately gave my life its structure.
Looking back across more than seventy-plus years, ambition was the dominant strand. Not in the absence of duty, but often in quiet tension with the expectations placed on women. From an early age, I carried a persistent dream of becoming a scientist worthy of a Nobel Prize. Pursuing that dream required navigating obstacles both visible and unseen—financial constraints, gender bias, family responsibilities, and the social conventions of the times.
For women, ambition rarely arrives unchallenged. It must be negotiated, sometimes gently and sometimes through quiet defiance. In that process, women become the protagonists of their own lives. This memoir is the story of one such protagonist.
My journey began in a crowded household of eight children, where my parents' commitment to education aligned with my own appetite for learning. I was fortunate to possess both the desire and the aptitude to pursue science. Yet life, like any long experiment, introduced uncontrolled variables. Opportunities appeared and disappeared. Paths closed and unexpected doors opened. Through it all, a single quest remained constant: to understand the patterns hidden beneath the surface of things.
That quest led me across disciplines, continents, and generations—from physics to biology, from laboratories to classrooms, and eventually to the emerging world of genomics and computation. Along the way, I learned that discovery is rarely a straight path. It is shaped as much by perseverance as by talent, as much by circumstance as by choice.
This memoir is the culmination of two decades of self-reflection—a journey to understand who I am and what compels me to make decisions that feel entirely natural to me yet are often perceived by others as unconventional or even controversial.
I have chosen the form of prose poems because my life has been too layered to fit comfortably within a conventional narrative. I wanted each experience to speak with clarity, unburdened by literary ornamentation. Each piece stands on its own, yet together they weave the story of a life where ambition, duty, and cultural norms continually converged, collided, and reshaped one another.
In offering this account, I remain mindful of the frailty of memory. These events are filtered through time and personal experience. Where my recollections differ from those of others who shared them, I offer my acknowledgment and apology with humility and care.
