I Hate Doing It, But I Love Having Done It

Listen Later

Many introverts are kind of fond of their own space. It can sometimes be a bit hard to peel ourselves away from our homes and personal projects, even to do things we enjoy doing. Not because we're naturally recluses or anti-social. We are just usually pretty happy in our own company.

Poet and writer Dorothy Parker said 'I hate writing, I love having written'.

This is a notion that has stuck with me ever since I first heard it. It's even a philosophy that I believe can help introverts and highly sensitive people. What are the activities, situations or invitations that might be uncomfortable or annoying while doing them, but make you feel satisfied afterwards?

Exercise is a good example. Running isn't always that fun, but you can't beat the feeling of having run. Drinking vegetable juice. Tastes pretty bad, makes me feel great. I love having drunk it. Speaking to someone on the phone; I hate phones but I love the feeling of having caught up with someone I care about.

And then there are gigs...a big realisation for me is that there are aspects of performing that are draining. Stuff I don't relish so much. But I LOVE having gigged. The best part of playing a show is the drive home. Not because I've escaped, but because I feel happy with what I've achieved - the people I've met and the good vibes I get from performing.

I'm talking about satisfaction at a deep intrinsic level. Not satisfaction that something is simply done and dusted, but satisfaction with the result itself. The result makes the discomfort worth it.

"I really couldn't be arsed with it, but I'm so pleased I did it."

How many times do you have that feeling when things are done? Learn to question that inner voice that tells you you can't be arsed...some things are really worth doing.

In this episode we explore how this idea can help introverts and highly sensitive people do what matters and ignore what doesn't.
