Not enjoyable
This was a hard book to get through, it might be because of the translation. While the translation isn't bad it does throw off the pace and the book moves slowly. I felt like I was just reading to get through the book and not really enjoying it. The characters aren't likable at all and I found myself not caring about any of them. The plot is about marrying up to improve your place in life with some child abuse thrown in. Which sounded interesting if it was done right.
There was a lot of going from the present to the past and that just makes it harder to follow. The different themes in the book just seemed muddy and hard to define. I think it was an ambitious book that if it had followed just the child abuse angle or the marrying up angle then it would have felt more cohesive.
Heart Wrenching Story of how childhood trauma lasts until you work through it.
Although this story does not effortlessly glide through the story arc, it is poignant. I loved that there were many characters who had trauma in all different ways-working through their individual crisis. However, I found it painful on the decisions near the end. It was a great story that needs to be told over and over until the world sees how childhood trauma negatively impacts adults and how without counseling the cycle of abuse/trauma just continues.
Refreshed my memory
We cannot know another's journey nor what has brought them to be or made them who they are, yet how quickly we judge them. This book is such a strong and skillfully written story of learning "the other side" of those whom we have been put alongside in our lives. The characters are those we will both judge and come to have compassion for. I recommended this book on my Facebook page. While it may not be for everyone, I found it quite moving.
It was a good book that I did enjoy
I confess it has been a while since I read it and not sure if it was narrated in 1st or 2nd person. It was a good book that I did enjoy. It was a little suspenseful and had me really pulling for the main character to survive. I actually related to parts of her story.
good story, excellent style
What I liked most about this book are the writer's unique style and the Japanese ambiance. The story is good but it is somewhat unfinished. It starts in France, with a good set of characters, but then continues in japan and the French characters are totally abandoned.
All in all a good read; I hope there will be more book of the same author
