I Jo LANKESTER | Intimacy Artist Statement

Listen Later

I seek to create images that tell a story of the landscapes, flora, and fauna of Queensland's north, weaving together rich layers that reflect the environmental narratives of my surroundings. Inspired by the foreshore on the fringe of the built environment in Townsville's North Ward, I want to tell the story of the local elements, such as the black cockatoos thatvisit the Beach Almond trees, intertwining their presence with the textures of trees, undergrowth, and lichens.

The experience of walking daily, in the early morning or evening light and the tropical heat, is the essence I seek to evoke in my imagery, layering my prints to create a depth reminiscent of the natural world. The black cockatoos are curious, confident and bold, drawn and scratched intoetching plates, then printed and collaged, and overlaid on printed surfaces that mimic the intricate tapestries of lichen, highlighting their resilience and long-standing role in the ecosystem.

My artwork draws parallels between flora and fauna, emphasising their symbiotic relationships. The prints and artists' books tell the complexity of my observations as memories and awe of my surroundings. The viewer's interaction with the artist's books reenacts the physicality of my art practice while flicking through the pages like my memories of place run through my internal image bank.
