I Knew the Breakup Was Coming

Listen Later

The conversation happened over coffee, and he left carrying something that wasn’t his to share.

Lewis ran into his friend’s partner unexpectedly one Sunday afternoon.

They exchanged polite greetings and sat down with their drinks.

At first the conversation stayed ordinary.

Work.

Weather.

Small updates.

Then she said she needed advice.

Things between her and Lewis’s friend had been feeling misaligned for months.

Different expectations.

Different timelines.

She spoke calmly.

Not angry.

Just certain.

She said she was planning to end the relationship soon.

She hadn’t told anyone else yet.

And she asked Lewis not to mention it.

That evening his friend called him about something unrelated.

Weekend plans.

A trip they were thinking about taking together.

Lewis heard the optimism in his voice.

The assumption that everything was continuing as normal.

There was a moment where he could have said something.

Instead he stayed within the lines of the conversation.

Three days later the relationship ended.

His friend called again, this time trying to understand what had happened.

Lewis said he hadn’t seen any signs.

Which was mostly true.

He hadn’t seen them.

He had simply heard the decision a few days earlier.

Years later, when his friend still describes the breakup as sudden, Lewis remembers the café table.

And the quiet knowledge he carried for those three days.
