I walk for exercise and enjoyment. Sometimes I walk early in the morning, before my brain has time to figure out what I’m trying to do. But I only walk. I will run, but only if something is chasing me. And I don’t know about you, but some days it just seems harder getting motivated to exercise.
Awhile back I woke up in my hotel room, the morning after a late night concert. Exercise was not on my radar. I needed to walk, especially after all of the late night snacks I had eaten, but as I thought about emails and calls I needed to return, I started talking myself out of exercise. I call that resistance training.
As I was drinking my coffee and trying to wake up, I opened the curtains and saw a lady walking fast around the parking lot. It was obvious she was serious about getting her exercise. She was at least in her 70s and let me tell you, her tennis shoes were moving right along. The frigid morning did not slow her down. I sat my coffee on the desk and started warming up for a morning walk.
Later that day I thought about how that lady had inspired me. I may never know her name, but her commitment had made a difference in my day. She had encouraged me to walk, without ever knowing she had.
That can also be said of our walk with God. Consistency matters. We all know that actions speak louder than words. So may we encourage others as we daily walk in newness of life!
