My name is Christopher LaBeause, In May of 2020 a soldier who I had deployed with sadly took his own life. When I was notified of his death I sat at the end of my bed and thought for hours on how I could stop this plague sweeping our military. He was the 11th friend I had lost total in 12 years being in the Army and the 6th to suicide alone. In a report released by the U.S. Department of Defense (D.O.D.) twenty-two U.S. service members lost their lives in Afghanistan in 2019. The D.O.D. released another report that in the first quarter of 2019 (January 2019 to March 2019) that 90 Active duty service members had taken their own life. At that moment my enemy number one was no longer a triggerman setting explosives off under a truck or a spotter calling in motor rounds on my position. Suicide had just became my number one enemy and I was not going to allow it to take another brother away from his family.
In the military we do radio checks all the time to check in at make sure everything is going as plan why don’t we do it now? That’s when a light came on and the practice of #StoryTime was born. The simple acted of having a set date and time to drop what you are doing and reach out to a buddy you have not talked to in a while just to check in and see how they are doing. So on the 22nd of each month at 1800 I ask you to reach out to that friend you have not talked to in a while see how they are doing and reconnect with them.
