Award-winning debut author Loraine Peck has a lot to celebrate. Not only did her first book The Second Son win the best debut crime fiction in the 2021 Ned Kelly Awards, Loraine is also a cancer survivor having had ovarian and breast cancers. She’s doing well and now advocates for more research and funding into gynaecological cancers. She’s on the board of The Australian Gynaecological Cancer Foundation. Loraine’s also got an intimate connection with crime as you’ll find out. Taking Aussie TV’s Jane Halifax FP from screen to page: Roger Simpson

Kate McCaffrey is an acclaimed author of young adult fiction and now she’s written her first adult novel. 
DOUBLE LIVES is a story within a story following Amy, Journalist trying to establish herself in Western Australia again after time away working in Melbourne. 
Amy has the idea to do a podcast and the season one case she focuses on is the murder of young transgender woman Casey Williams. 
Upon arrest, Casey’s boyfriend Jonah Scott confessed to her murder immediately and pleaded guilty. But Amy thinks there’s more behind this shocking crime and delves into the cult run by Jonah’s family and its potential involvement in Casey’s murder. 
The story explores identity, truth and acceptance in a compelling way. It’s my first time reading Kate’s work and I’ll be reading her young adult books, which have been on secondary school reading lists for a number of years.

Greg Woodland is a scriptwriter, director and once upon a time…an aspiring punk rocker. After a number of his script projects, including one picked up by Disney, didn’t make it to production he turned to crime fiction to tell his stories. His debut THE NIGHT WHISTLER, dubbed a rural gothic noir, was actually adapted from a script he’d written and inspired in part from a real life crime his mum endured. His second book THE CARNIVAL IS OVER has a few characters carry over from The Night Whistler…and is set in the same fictionalised town in NSW’s New England region. Mum had a stalker and it inspired my debut crime novel: Greg Woodland

Alexandra Shapiro is a New York criminal defence attorney and one of the leading appeals lawyers in the United States. Early in her legal career Alexandra was a clerk for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, when the iconic legal figure had just started on the Supreme Court. Alexandra was a federal prosecutor in Manhattan before starting her own firm. She  has a particular focus on the defence of criminal insider trading cases…these are complex cases where she says sometimes people can unwittingly find themselves charged with really serious crimes…
While she’s deep in the work of true life crime every day, Alexandra has turned to writing fiction as a way to shed light on how the criminal justice system works…and its failings. Her debut legal crime thriller is called PRESUMED GUILTY.

The brief on turning my legal experience into fiction: Alexandra Shapiro

The book we are going to talk about in this episode is one of my stand-out reads this year. Debut author John Byron’s dark, thrilling crime fiction THE TRIBUTE sees a tough, blokey Sydney Detective Dave Murphy chasing a serial killer obsessed with a 16th century anatomy text called The Fabrica. And his art historian sister Jo joins the hunt as well. 
The Tribute is a tantalising blend of medical-forensic and police procedural that has an important issue underpinning the narrative - what is to be a man in modern Australian society? I love crime fiction that is dark and character-driven and The Tribute is exactly this - it’s jaw-droppingly good!
