Many scholars believe that David penned the words of Psalm 34 when he was at one of the lowest points of his life. He was on the run from King Saul, meaning he had given up the comfort of his wife, the warmth of his home, his job, his mentor, the closeness of his covenant partner Jonathan, and we find him in the city of his enemies about to hit the bottom of the barrel. Sitting at the gate of his enemies he loses his dignity. He becomes like that of a wild man, allowing saliva to run down his beard, scraping his nails on the gate of the city. Putting him in a place where even his greatest enemy rejected him. In this scenario we find the words of Psalm 34, "I will bless the Lord at all times: His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My should shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together."
