Ian Dunlop – Dire predictions by a born-again environmentalist

Listen Later

In this podcast, Beyond Zero radio presents a speech by former coal executive, Ian Dunlop, recorded at a Darebin Climate Action Network (DCAN) event.  Ian Dunlop is a senior member of the Breakthrough Advisory Board, who have release a new report What Lies Beneath: The Understatement Of Existential Climate Risk.
"Dire predictions by a born-again environmentalist. Ian Dunlop's working life has included an executive position with International Fossil Fuel, chair of the Australian Coal Association and longtime member of the Club of Rome. He has written a number of articles, some with David Spratt and one titled "Disaster Alley" mainly about Australia and the Australia-Pacific region. But his main contention is that the first responsibility of a government is to "safeguard the people and their future well-being". At this the Australian government falls well short with the absence of a climate budget , no recognition of the present severity of climate change and how it poses such an existential risk to humanity. He says on the present trajectory there is no chance of the world even meeting its low Paris target and if it is higher than 2 degrees then civilisation would be "lucky to survive".

This sounds very blunt but Ian is at best realistic and says people "think that the current way of life will continue" although 84% of people from 8 countries in the Global Challenge Foundation survey (Australia 75%) said they consider climate change "a global catastrophic risk".

He then spoke of possible solutions for the world to "avoid social chaos" adding that the "entire basis of the capitalist system cannot continue"and in Australia the government seems to be very fixated on company taxation and it works within a short term time frame. One by one he mentioned communities such as business, investment, scientific and academic, defence farming etc. some of which are only starting to recognise their responsibility and many still claiming that fossil fuels will continue until 2050 whereas I an says the economy should be decarbonised by 2030."  Commentary by Bev McIntyre [Photo supplied]
