On Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula, the Krýsuvík system connects Seltún’s steaming ground with the dark water of Kleifarvatn.At Seltún, rainwater descends through fractured basalt and returns carrying heat and deep-earth chemistry. Sulfur forms around the vents, iron turns the clay red, and acid reduces rock to pale silica and unstable mud. The boardwalk is not decoration. It is the narrow agreement between a visitor and ground that no longer behaves as solid ground should.The episode then moves to Kleifarvatn, a lake with no visible surface drainage. After earthquakes struck in 2000, fissures opened beneath the water and the lake began to shrink. The changing shoreline exposed hot springs, strange mud formations and an old question about what moves below.

You are standing on land that is pulling apart.

At the southwestern edge of Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula, three places sit within less than ten kilometres of each other: the Bridge Between Continents, the Stampar crater row, and Stóra Sandvík.

This episode follows them as one connected landscape. At the bridge, a small metal span crosses a rift valley where the tectonic plates are moving apart. At Stampar, red-black scoria, rough lava, and slow-growing moss turn the ground into a volcanic record. At Sandvík, yellow sand, white Atlantic surf, cold-weather surfers, and sneaker waves make the beach beautiful for the wrong reasons.

The Blue Lagoon looks like a natural Icelandic miracle.

It is not.

Bláa lónið began beside the Svartsengi power plant on the Reykjanes Peninsula, where spent mineral-rich geothermal brine failed to drain back into the lava. Silica sealed the ground. A strange milky-blue lagoon formed in Illahraun - “Evil Lava.” Then people started bathing in it.

What looked like industrial waste became relief for psoriasis sufferers, then a ritual, then a business, then one of the most photographed geothermal spas on Earth.
