When buying a portfolio of assets, many instances a hedge fund will come and say they’re closing out a fund and need to get rid of some assets. What happens along the way is all the good ones get cherry-picked and all that’s left at the end are the bad ones. When they get to a certain point where there’s a limited number of good ones, they usually sell the good ones at a heavy discount along with the bad ones.
