● Biometrics are playing an increasingly important role in secure, frictionless access and identity verification, particularly in travel. Airports worldwide are adopting facial recognition for boarding, with Thailand rolling out a “One ID” system across six major airports and Air Canada expanding its biometric boarding gates pilot in Vancouver. However, a Delta Airlines stowaway incident highlighted the need for rigorous implementation of biometric systems to prevent security breaches.

● Advancements in AI and biometric technologies are empowering banks to detect and prevent automated fraud, as generative AI becomes a powerful tool for creating synthetic identities. Experts recommend banks embrace AI and machine learning-powered fraud detection systems that can analyze transaction data in real-time to identify hidden fraud patterns.

● Age assurance technologies are at the forefront of regulatory debates worldwide. Australia is progressing with age verification trials alongside legislative measures, while the UK's Ofcom prepares to enforce stringent age assurance requirements under the Online Safety Act. Spain's introduction of SSI-based digital wallets for age verification showcases a privacy-preserving alternative.

● The growing sophistication of generative AI models raises ethical concerns about their potential misuse in creating deepfakes. A Stanford and Google DeepMind study demonstrated how AI could replicate human personalities with alarming accuracy, raising concerns about potential misuse in deepfake scenarios.

● Balancing innovation with robust policies and safeguards is crucial for the responsible development and deployment of biometric technologies. Experts at the iMARS workshop emphasized the importance of combining innovation with effective regulations to address morphing and forgery threats. They recommend extending security measures used for passports to other identity documents, implementing biometric verification during enrollment, and incorporating image quality assessments into identity systems.
