IEVA'S POLKA – LYRICS TUTORIAL 4

Listen Later

EDIT: There is an error that I have accidentally copied to many places... I'm so sorry about this! But fortunately you know already how that part of the song goes. I mean the salivili... 😃

This is the fourth tutorial of Ieva's polka lyrics. I decided to leave my solo part to the last, because I need to think about how to carry it out. In the meanwhile you can proceed with the actual story.

I'd like to remind again, that my translations are not exhaustive, but give an idea of the meaning of the words. The story is told in a humorous and down to earth style. And again, remember that this text is written in Savo dialect which is very difficult to translate unambiguously. 😃

VERSE 4 – the story:

This couple had some fun after the dance evening. After supposedly intensive wooing the lad says that he got to canoodle (once?). This could mean either proceeding from hugging to kissing (referred to the culture at that time when young people were a bit more decent than nowadays) or even a more intimate act. 😃 The verb used here is a tricky one to conclude, because it could exist only in the writers mind. In addition it's said that when you listen to Savonian people you can never be sure what they mean. Anyway, after that they went to Ieva's house and met the mother who was suspicious and eager to quarrel. Ieva starts to sob, but the lad says that don't you worry, we'll get to dance some more. Then comes again the chorus which doesn't mean anything except the last word.

5:30 the "Verses learned so far" part.
