We’re in the midst of a study through the book of Romans called, Romans: Grace Changes Everything. And in this book, the Apostle Paul has been telling the Christians in the church in 1st century Rome, and us by extension, that we’re in a fight. It is a fight with sin and evil and Satan and the forces of darkness in our world. And there’s an implicit question being asked along the way and it is, “Who would win in a fight between those sides?” And we’ve seen that the human who is armed only in his own strength doesn’t fare very well. In fact, they get beaten pretty soundly.

But what if that human is armed? What if they have the weapons of God in their corner? What would happen then? 

That’s what Paul is addressing as we come to our passage for today, which is Romans 8:31-39. Paul wants his readers to consider the fight if God is on their side. So, he begins the passage in that way. In verse 31 he invites the reader to consider, “If God is for us…”. (Romans 8:31).  That’s what sets the stage for this whole passage, and then Paul draws some conclusions in the form of questions, which are really declarations.
