if... (1968) A cult British classic from repentant toff Lindsay Anderson, if... follows a group of schoolboys worn down by the regime of their oppressive boarding school - culminating in an act of blood-soaked revenge.  Dream-like reveries and Godardian flourishes blur the lines between reality and fantasy as the lads contemplate an alternative to their regimented existence.

The Seventh Continent (1988) Michael Haneke's feature debut is remarkably assured - with the Austrian ice-man expertly calibrating a middle-class family's descent into self-destruction. Absolutely huge eighties soundtrack deployed with maximum irony.
