Our general assumptions that the rich are inherently good or worthy and the poor are inherently bad or unworthy are completely reversed in the telling of this story and most of Luke’s gospel. The compassion and work of justice on behalf of the poor is a clear instruction in this story; we must follow Jesus’s commands and listen when he speaks.”
