Margaret Atwood called the saying 'What you don't know won't hurt you “a dubious maxim: sometimes what you don't know, she says, can hurt you very much.” I would agree, especially when it comes to not even knowing what we don’t know and when that ignorance can really trip us up! In my view, this is very much the case when it comes to crossing cultures. There are at least 3 areas of ‘not knowing’ where we can save ourselves a lot of trouble by simply finding out.
