To help you discover your “big idea” ask yourself:
What fires me up?
What bothers me?
What is missing?
What do I keep coming back to?
What is ripe for reinvention?
What is my unique twist on problem X?
Will I want to keep working on this idea in 6 months, a year?
If you feel like you don’t have time to be creative ask yourself:
If I begin to see my attention as a precious resource, how might that change how I choose to spend it?
How can I shift from a manager’s schedule to a maker’s schedule?
What am I currently spending time on that is just not a priority now?
Can I trade a typical morning activity (reading news, answering emails) for time to work on my creative idea?
To help yourself look at the problem you’re looking to solve with fresh perspective, ask yourself:
What would I notice if I were encountering this for the first time?
What if I stood on the deck to look at this from a different angle?
What is in the background?
What would Seinfeld be amused by here?
What would Steve Jobs be frustrated by?
If you’re having trouble getting started or getting momentum with your creative project or idea:
Am I chasing butterflies?
Who can hold me accountable?
Am I rearranging the bookshelves?
How can I lower the bar here?
What if I just begin anywhere (middle, end, in between)?
Can I make a prototype to give some initial form to my idea (outline, rough sketch, mind map, collage)?
