This week’s sermon is drawn from I Peter 1:17-25, John 21:15-25, and Luke 24:13-35.
Portrayals of Christ sometimes illuminate our understanding of who Jesus is, but sometimes it obscures. People who live in exile, who know they do, must take pains to remind themselves what Jesus looks like. Of course, following Jesus isn’t just about knowing what he looks like; it is about knowing him.
Nothing is hidden that won’t be disclosed. Nor is anything secret except in order to be revealed. - Mark 4:22
Sometimes, a depiction of Christ might obscure his true identity. But, on the road to Emmaus, Jesus’ true identity is concealed so that the disciples might see him for who he is. And the disciples do, crying, “Weren’t our hearts burning within us?”
