This election year the candidates talked about immigration more than any other in my recent memory. Being a third-generation immigrant has always been something I am proud of even though I didn’t always grasp the extent of what my heritage was or where I came from, for many immigrants a lot gets literally “lost in translation”. One of the values that I learned in Hawai`i was that to be able to describe your history not just your own personal herstory but that of your families is a way to connection and community.. so not having all the pieces of my immediate family history left me feeling that there was always something missing. In 2014  I  set out to find the pieces of long-lost cousins left in the Netherlands during WWII, a sad and bittersweet story   I learned is that these stories are woven into our blood, and values, spoken or not, are passed down from generations to generation. As I put the pieces together I have an opportunity to celebrate my herstory and know that I  have integrated the best and most important values that my grandfather took with him all those years ago, which has become a source of pride and inspiration!
