In 2022, the Immunization Agenda 2030 (IA2030) Strategic Priority 1 (SP1) working group plans to develop a framework that describe the relationships between immunization, PHC, and UHC, and a theory of action describing steps needed to achieve the ultimate goal of increased universal health coverage. The SP1 working group, together with the Geneva Learning Foundation, plans to apply a co-creation approach to ensure that the frameworks reflect the perspectives of immunization program staff (e.g. vaccinators, managers, planners) and clients.
Leveraging the opportunity to engage with national and sub-national immunization staff at Teach to Reach: Connect 4 on 10 December 2021, SP1 held a 30-minute brainstorming session with a core group of IA2030 Alumni who submitted a SP1 action plan. The goals of this session were to:
1. Listen to participants’ perspectives on how immunization could strengthen PHC and UHC
2. Identify specific but context-sensitive actions that participants believe will lead to improved PHC/UHC through immunization.
Analysis of participant responses will help the SP1 working group to refine the focus, or goal, of the theory of action. Analysis will also yield information on participants’ motivations, priorities, and pain points, which will ultimately strengthen the relevance and applicability of the framework.
The brainstorming components used the “backcasting” approach from human centered design, where the group starts with a How Might We statement, and then is asked to imagine what the ideal future state looks like, and actions that are needed to achieve it (see figure below).
