Happiness and a well-rounded life are not destinations but journeys you travel along during your life. This week’s guest, Sandee Sgarlata is known as America’s Happiness Coach and the author of Happiness Solved: Climbing One Hundred Steps, and the host of the Happiness Solved Podcast. Sandee delves into the role that emotional intelligence plays in leadership, what you can do to develop your emotional intelligence, and what goes into living a well-rounded, happy life.
- When people are promoted to a leadership position, the organization needs to provide them with some kind of leadership training because not everyone is a natural leader. However, with the right training, they can become great leaders.
Leadership is a skill that you can learn through practice as you would any other skill.Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize and understand the emotions in yourself and in others. And then the ability to use this awareness to manage your behavior and your relationships. As humans, our first reaction to a situation will be emotional. As your emotional intelligence develops, you will be able to better control your thoughts following your immediate reaction to a trigger. You will need to practice productive ways of responding. When situations trigger strong emotional responses come up, there are 3 steps to how you respond: 1. The situation; 2. The thoughts around it; 3. How we react. You need to work on that reaction in order to produce more successful results. Enhancing and improving your emotional intelligence comes down to two main factors self-management and self-control. It’s really about being well-rounded which includes everything from your mindset to your physical health. The easiest way to improve your emotional intelligence is by paying attention to your thoughts. How often do negative thoughts pop up in your mind? You need to push yourself to become comfortable being uncomfortable so you can grow. - “In order to grow, you have to be comfortable being uncomfortable. We only grow in every way by pushing ourselves into being uncomfortable” - Sandee Sgarlata
