Today we are launching our Interview series on Expert-talks with maavrus,  with Leaders in the Analytics, AI and Transformation space.  For our very first episode, our CEO Mahadevann Iyerr ( Mahaa ) is in conversation with Pankaj Rai, Group Chief Data & Analytics Officer, Aditya Birla Group.

Pankaj is one of the foremost Analytics , AI and Transformation thought leaders , and has had an illustrious career spanning Wells Fargo, Dell, Standard Chartered Scope, and GE Capital.

It was great to learn from Pankaj’s practical, intuitive and business led approach, which has helped him to deliver value and be successful, across multiple industry domains. We are listing below, some key learnings from the interview

  • His success as a business leader and thought influencer, could be largely attributable to
    • Being genuine in sharing freely, learning openly, being responsive & polite. Key reasons people like to work and engage with him.
    • His giving precedence to working with the right people & culture, more than the work content.
    • He has generally used a first principles approach, to define his role deliverables from the lens of business strategy & business impact, and then build an analytics / tech ecosystem to support those objectives. This has helped him to be successful across industries.
    • The what, when and frequency in delivering business insights, should be synchronized with decision making cycles, to minimize noise from excess information.
    • Transformation & Analytics leaders, can play an increasing decisive role in business value creation, by intimately engaging with business teams, and helping them to appreciate the “Art of the Possible” with New Tech.
    • Agile Frugal experimentation, by fusion teams from business & analytics functions, can be used to identify and scale big impact transformations.
    • As technologies like Open AI evolve, Multi-dimensional thinking and Defining the business problem worth solving will become higher order capabilities, while problem solving can be increasingly automated.
    • Professionals will need to build skills/ appreciation across the full stack. Business leaders will need to understand the possible applications of tech & AI, while transformation & AI leaders will need to develop business vision. They can further augment it with complementing ecosystem of skills.
    • Atomization of talent using gig talent will provide a level of flexibility and scale in future. However for that to happen, organizations will need to first invest in-house in design, system and architecture thinking capabilities, who can seamlessly bridge business relevance and on-demand talent.
    • The global context is continuously changing, and so analytics professionals will need to develop & practice mental models which keeps them curious, agile and adaptive.
