"Pride and Prejudice" is a classic novel set in the early 19th-century English countryside. It primarily focuses on the manners, marriage, and morality of the British landed gentry of the time.

The story revolves around Elizabeth Bennet, one of five sisters in the Bennet family. The Bennets are a middle-class family living in the fictional village of Longbourn. The central plot of the novel is the romantic tension between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, a wealthy and proud aristocrat.

The novel begins with the news that a wealthy young gentleman named Charles Bingley has rented the nearby Netherfield Park, stirring excitement among the Bennet family. Mrs. Bennet, especially, is eager to marry off one of her daughters to him. Bingley is introduced to society along with his two sisters and his even wealthier friend, Mr. Darcy. While Bingley is well-received, Darcy comes off as proud and aloof.

Bingley and Jane Bennet, Elizabeth's eldest sister, quickly form an attachment. However, Darcy discourages Bingley from proposing to Jane, believing her to be socially inferior. Meanwhile, Darcy finds himself attracted to Elizabeth but is initially resistant due to her lower social status.
